Expedite Your Marriage Certificate
Can’t wait 10 to 14 weeks for your marriage certificate?
While having your marriage registration expedited isn’t guaranteed, follow these six steps* to increase your chances of receiving your marriage certificate within 2-6 weeks.
Acquire your marriage license from City Hall or your municipal office. Note: It’s only valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Download your marriage license application here.
On the day of your wedding, apply for your marriage certificate online. Make note of your order number so you can include it in your proof of urgency letter.
Write a proof of urgency letter. The letter should clearly state why you are expediting your marriage license to receive your certificate. Include your marriage certificate order number and marriage license number at the top or bottom of the letter. Here is a great sample letter by Tade Credgeur (aka The Marrying Lady).
Scan and print any documents that support the reason you are expediting your marriage certificate. For example: your visa, passport, airline tickets, letter of employment or wedding invitation.
Visit your nearest Canada Post outlet to purchase a small national Xpresspost envelope. Cost: $27.46.
Bring all of the papers to your wedding officiant on your wedding day: i.e. your license, letter of urgency, supporting document(s), and Xpresspost envelope.
